Emergency Load Curtailment Plan (ELCP)

ATTENTION MEMBERS: TVA has initiated Emergency Load Curtailment

June 24, 9:30am ET – The Tennessee Valley Authority has initiated the Emergency Load Curtailment Plan (ELCP), STEP 20.  Step 20 is a public appeal to members of the cooperative to temporarily reduce electrical consumption by turning off unnecessary lighting, by increasing the thermostat set point up by a few degrees, and by avoiding the use of any large appliances unless absolutely necessary.  We do not expect there to be any rolling blackouts associated with this ELCP action.

TVA has an Emergency Load Curtailment Program for when demand on the electric grid is at its highest. The ELCP is designed to ensure the stable operation of TVA’s generation and transmission assets during periods of peak load.

Sequential steps of the ELCP:

• Step 10 – TVA and VEC will reduce the electric loads inside of their own facilities.
• Step 20 – TVA and VEC will make a public appeal for voluntary reduction in electric usage.
• Step 30 – TVA and VEC will make sure every possible action has been taken to avoid the mandatory involvement of the public.
• Step 40 – TVA will call on any industrial or commercial customers who are enrolled in their interruptible programs to reduce electric load.
• Step 50 – TVA will call on VEC to reduce electric load by disconnecting a percentage of the circuits fed out of VEC substations (rolling blackouts).
• Step 60 – TVA will cut the power supply to entire VEC substations (large scale rolling blackouts).
